The archaeology of west Cheshire

Introduction

This website is based around what I was able to learn about the archaeology of western Cheshire during the more than thirteen years I worked as a Senior Archaeologist for Chester City Council’s Archaeological Service. The views expressed are purely my own and are occasionally slightly unorthodox (for instance, my assessment of the Late Roman status of Chester is not necessarily shared by former colleagues). However, I feel that this information is worth making available to the public. All of it is contained in what is euphemistically called ‘grey literature’: the documents produced by the Archaeological Service and distributed to limited numbers of people. Unless you have access to the Cheshire County Sites and Monuments Record or to Chesire Diocesan and County Record Office, there is a good chance you will not be able to consult what I wrote. Unfortunatly, this is the way that too many of the results of archaeological research and fieldwork are ‘published’ these days. Any means of disseminating this material is surely to be welcomed. This is my little effort.
